Day 1 - Home to the Highlands

Welcome to our 5 day tour to the Southern Highlands. Taking in the scenery, our touring takes us to the picturesque Kangaroo Valley. We stop of lunch at The Friendly Inn before taking some time to enjoy the town at leisure where we can look at the many boutique shops including bookstores, homewares or indulge in some of the local sweets. Meeting the coach we continue to Fitzroy Falls Visitor Centre, located in the middle of the cool rainforest of the Moreton National Park. We’ll enjoy a stroll along the boardwalk through restored native bushland to a lookout at the top of Fitzroy Falls. The landscape is stunning! We continue to Mittagong, the northern gateway to the Highlands. Home to Australia’s first iron works, it is an excellent example of a country town which has retained its historic beginnings with old and new sitting side by side.

Day 2 - Fairground Follies and Berrima

We start the day enchanted by the sights and sounds of Fairground Follies. Akin to visiting an old-fashioned amusement park, here we’ll find a collection of self-playing instruments and mechanical music, fair orans, street organs and a 100 year old steam carousel. Not far away is the historic village of Berrima, one of the best remaining examples of a small Australian town of the 1830s. We visit the splendid courthouse, scene of Australia’s first trial by jury! Our lunch is at Australia’s oldest continually licenced pub – The Surveyor General Inn. Before leaving we have some time to wander around this historic village with its lovely buildings and craft shops.

Here we visit the Bradman Museum and International Cricket Hall of Fame which brings cricket to life with interactive touch screens, an expansive range of displays, memorabilia and videos depicting the place of cricket in the context of world history. From here we visit the vibrant Corbett Gardens. During Tulip Time, over 100,000 tulips and 25,000 annuals are planted each year to transform Corbett Gardens and other parks across the shire into stunning displays of sweeping spring colour. This afternoon we visit Red Cow Farm, a lovely garden set on 6 acres of picturesque gardens. The garden is divided into different garden areas or ‘rooms’, with new vistas and surprises around every corner. Red Cow Farm is a dream for anyone with a green thumb.

Hundreds of Scottish oil shale miners who brought with them their skills in the mining and retorting technique and the stilling and brewing of “sly grog”. Here we are taken on an adventure in purpose-built people movers where we will see the ruins of a bygone era. Our tour guide will take us on a fascinating historical tour of this hidden valley, full of mystery, intrigue and drama. After the historic site tour, we will be invited to a fully guided tour of the distillery as well as indulging in some tastings.

Day 5 - Southern Highlands to Home

We farewell our wonderful hosts as we begin travelling home. After a morning on the coach, we stop at Tuggeranong Homestead – an extensive, heritage-listed rural property in the heart of Southern Canberra. The Tuggeranong Homestead holds many layers of history. From its indigenous occupants, its convict connections, its pastoral period, its links to Federation and its association with the writing of the Official History of World War One. After lunch here we continue back to the Sapphire Coast, arriving home late afternoon from a fantastic tour.
